Indications for Genetic Testing and Counseling
Any individual or family concerned about a possible genetic condition is encouraged to seek an evaluation. A genetic evaluation is particularly recommended in the following situations where there is a personal or family history of:
- One or more birth defects
- A genetic disorder
- A chromosome abnormality
- Intellectual Development Disorder or developmental delay
- Neuromuscular abnormalities
- Unexplained metabolic problems
- Congenital or familial hearing loss or blindness
- Abnormal growth patterns
- Abnormal sexual development
- Prenatal exposure to drugs or medications, including alcohol
- Cancer

Our clinical coordinator will respond to these requests as quickly as possible to facilitate an appointment at a clinic site near you.
Also, counseling is recommended for:
- Members of ethnic groups at risk for specific disorders
- A carrier of a genetic disorder
- Women who will be 35 years old or older when pregnant
- Women considering Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis
- Women with an ultrasound showing abnormalities in the fetus
- Parents related to each other
- Couples with infertility, stillbirth, or recurrent miscarriage
- Women with maternal diabetes, PKU, or epilepsy, who are contemplating pregnancy
